Lessons in Morality

points of hamilton

On our daily post-lunch trip to the Tim Hortons drive thru today, I was telling Miki about the time *Alan found $50 on the ground opposite my cash register. It was a relatively slow night, so I knew who had dropped it, in fact I remembered the guy choosing a $20 instead of that $50 to pay for what he bought.

"It's mine!" Alan declared. While my interest was momentarily piqued, morality stupidly kicked in.
"It is not yours. What if that guy comes back?"
"He doesn't know he lost it!"
"I'm pretty sure he'll realize. Gimme that!"

I snatched the bill out of his hand and ran out to the parking lot to give the money back to the customer before he drove away.

Well, sure enough, as soon as I finished retelling this story, we handed the Tim Hortons girl $5.01 to pay for 3 coffees, and she handed Miki $15 back.

We both stared down in shock. The first thought in my mind, despite the conversation we'd just had, was a defiant "TAKE IT! TAKE IT!!!"

Miki gave the lady back the $15, as he should have.

[But really, as long as that girl didn't get in trouble for it, I wouldn't have felt bad about it with all the Roll Up the Rims I've please-played-again on this year. http://jui.cc/oE ]

Hat Magic

I have this awesome hat. Originally I called it my 'immigrant cabby' hat. Originally, also, it fit my head. I think my hair was really flat that day. I wish someone cool with a slightly smaller head than mine (or with the same sized head but less hair) could use this hat. It's going to waste.

Also... the aforementioned Tim Hortons cup on my desk just moved on my desk. Maybe due to some hard-typing. Maybe due to ghosts. I'll investigate this further at a later date.

I don't play baby games.

island, on the rocks

An empty Tim Hortons cup sits on my desk, to the left of my computer and to the Southeast of my phone. This is a cue for me to make a tea. I enjoy a good Earl Grey tea these days. I also enjoy 'paying back' my sleep debt.

One day Miklos is going to pay back his sleep debt too, but his case will be much more Van Winkle than mine (minus all the tragedy). When he awakes, there will be mugs and mugs of coffee all around him because I was prepared for him to wake up one day. The room will also be fully renovated to adapt to the era we then find ourselves in. I'd wake up to that! Sleep for 20 years, then new decor and a shitload of old undrinkable coffee to greet him as he rubs the sleep-grit out of his eyes. Hell, I'll even make some muffins, if the eggs in the fridge aren't then as expired as the ones that currently sit in it.

Blinky: The Silent Cleaner

half lit

I got Blinky yesterday after resigning myself to the fact that my angelfish probably isn't going to die any time soon, and as such, he probably isn't going to start licking the algae he and his surroundings produce off the side of the aquarium. According to the place I bought him, Blinky is a 'rubber lip', which sounds kind of mafia-esque. He eats algae, and he does it quite well.

Thing is, since I got him, the dirt has dramatically disappeared, which is great, but I've seen Blinky about twice; the rest of the times I've looked for him (which are a bunch, I can assure you), I have come up short. He has a real knack for hiding in a place virtually unhide-in-able.

I have to give this guy some credit. When he does come out, I'm never around, and he does a hell of a job wiping the glass of his co-dweller's filth. He's like a phantom. A phantom who is really efficient at tidying up something I have no willingness whatsoever to do myself.

Oh and the free iced coffee from Tim Hortons (today only, from 12pm-5pm) went down smooth. Much better than McDonalds' iced coffee from days of yore (or two years ago when it premiered, anyhow, which is the last time I tried it).

In other news, job hunting? Not going so well! Are we shocked? I'm just plain shocked.

everybody's got a lighthouse

Every day is another trip to the mall for me. Closet organizing things, mostly, to make the most of my vertical space. And hooks. Plenty of hooks. I'm pretty sure either my bulletin board or full-length mirror (both??) will fall down in the middle of the night. Oop. Let's hope those hooks are structurally sound.

Living this far from a Tim Hortons leaves much to be desired. Actually... between this site and this one, I'm learning that the longest it could possibly take me to walk to the nearest Tim Hortons is ten (10) minutes. Hm! I'd rather just make a tea here. Walking downtown would take 20 minutes. That's actually not that bad! That's less than it (according to those sites) will take me to walk to work. How many minutes would it take me to walk to England??

Got my Omega-3s today from a lunchtime snack of cheese, crackers, and smoked, seasoned rainbow trout. Delicious!

Sometimes I am not altogether impressed with the customer service I receive

This is highly unoriginal of me to say, but sometimes I get it in my head that the standards for hiring someone at Tim Hortons are rather low.

Why, I hate to say this, but I might even conclude from several of my most recent visits that many of the employees who work there are rather, well, stupid!

And it's not as if I couldn't handle more stupid people. The heavens know I am wont to deal with them just about every day of my working life, and as such I should well be used to them. The thing that irks me is that when I am a perfectly courteous, respectful customer, I am still treated the way they treat their shitty, disrespectful swine clientele. And even so, I would expect this from their teenage and 20-something employees who feel insulted to even be in such a place wasting their young lives. However, when the person who is curt and inappropriate and unprofessional to me is an adult, nearly 50 years of age, who clearly was never taught any etiquette or common sense whatsoever, I begin to think that perhaps the establishment has some management issues.

I would be hard-pressed to conceive of a place where this middle-aged woman might have worked her entire life up until now that would allow her to get away with being such a ridiculous whore, aside of course from a whorehouse. Which is probably accurate, because Tim Hortons is likely the only place that will hire you with that in your resume, which, if she was left to construct it, probably did list her experience as a ten-cent concubine.

I would almost go as far as to say that, lately, I hate Tim Hortons. I hope that the one nearest me (which has by far proven the least professional location I've ever been to, even compared to the one at Bathurst & Dupont in Toronto which at the time only employed racist women) disappears. I hope that rusty old hag loses her job and has to feed on guttermeal to keep her moldy old bones functional.

It's a really pretty day out.
Really pretty.
